The Technivorm Moccamaster Coffee maker will remind you a lot of the Bonavita BV1800 Coffee maker. After all, both are SCAA certified (Specialty Coffee Association of America), so you’re guaranteed ridiculously good coffee from both.
What makes the Technivorm Moccamaster able to brew the most aromatic cup of coffee is the unique way in which is extracts the coffee:
- First of all, it maintains a brewing temperature between 198 and 205 degrees.
- The path in which water and coffee run touches as few material as possible, maintaining full aroma of the coffee.
- A cone-shaped filter and 9-hole water spray head encourage even extraction of coffee.
- It takes 5 to 6 minutes to brew a full pot of coffee.
- The hot plate holds the brewed coffee between 176 and 185 degrees in the glass carafe.
- To save energy, the machine switches at your discretion between 65 Watts and 48 Watts of power.
- The hot plate switches off periodically which increases the time the coffee stays hot without burning the bottom of the carafe.

Technivorm Moccamaster vs. Bonavita BV1800, What’s The Difference?

We’ve already mentioned the both the Technivorm and Bonavita coffee makers are quite similar. They use the same shower-head saturation process to brew a perfectly extracted cup of coffee, but there are a few differences between them:
- Temperature: The Bonavita raises its temperature up to 200 to 205F for brewing. While the Technivorm uses slightly lower temperature at 190 to 205 F.
- While the Bonavita is labeled as an 8-cup coffee maker and the Technivorm as a 10-cup coffee maker, both actually have the same water capacity. The Bonavita makes eight 5 oz cups and the Technivorm makes ten 4 oz cups, which results in the same capacity. This was pointed out in the following comparison video: {read our review of the Bonativa here}
So for the most part, these two coffee makers are quite similar. As noted in the video, you get hotter coffee from the Bonavita BV1800 but the coffee seems to taste smoother from the Technivorm.
Which Is Better? Technivorm Moccamaster or Bonavita?
Both Technivorm and Bonavita have built excellent coffee makers that meet the standards of Specialty Coffee Association. But picking which one of them is a better choice is not a simple thing… there are a few things to consider:
- Technivorm offers better build quality. Their machines are still handmade in their factory in the Netherlands. Bonavita’s machines are German-designed, but made in China. The Bonavita machine is of great quality, but is still somewhat ‘plasticy’ and does not compare to Technivorm’s metal built machines.
- Better quality comes at a price. Technivorm is way more expensive than Bonavita’s coffee makers. If you’re not on a tight budget, the Moccamaster would make a purchase. It’s a better looking machine and will most likely last you longer. If you’re on a budget, the Bonavita would be your pick.
- The warranty with Moccamasters machines are 5-years long. Bonavita’s warranty is 2-years. Again, you really do get what you pay for here.
- When it comes to options, Technivorm has a number models to choose from. Variety is capacity, shape and colors. Bonavita is available in one design only.
