If you like your Pour-Over but don’t like the hassle of brewing with paper filters, may it be the fact that you have to keep buying them, or have to first clean them before brewing, there’s another way to do pour-over without the use paper filters.

How To Brew Pour Over without a Paper Filter?

You can use a paperless pour over coffee dripper if you’d like to get rid of paper filters.  A Paperless (or No-filter) coffee dripper uses an ultra fine, mesh stainless steel filter instead of paper filters. You’ll add your coffee ground directly into the stainless steel filter and start your brewing process. Because the stainless steel filter is very fine, while the coffee ground is coarse, the coffee ground will not go through it, just like with paper filters.

What’s The Difference Between an Pour Over Brewer and a Drip Coffee Maker?

Pour Over Coffee Stand

  • With drip coffee makers, the coffee is brewed by mixing hot water with the coffee ground, then the coffee basically starts dripping into the carafe.
  • Pour Over is a manual brewing method where hot water is slowly poured over the coffee ground. The coffee ground is usually coarse, so the water goes slowly through it. In Pour Over, it’s all about contact time between water and coffee ground, the slower your brew, the better. This results in a very crisp and flavorful cup of coffee.
  • Manual Pour Over usually requires more time than drip to prepare the coffee, so while it’s great, it’s not very convenient for someone who’s rushing out to work for example.
  • In an automated pour over brewer, the manual process is duplicated but automatically. The water in a pour over brewer is showered over the coffee ground, unlike traditional coffee makers that pour the water all at once.
  • An auto pour over maker gives you the convenience of automation with the aromatic and bold flavor of pour over.

Common Questions About KitchenAid Pour Over Coffee Maker:

– Can I Brew Less Than a Full Carafe (8 Cups)?

Yes, you can. While other automatic pour over brewers only brew a full carafe, the KitchenAid brewer has a cup selector feature that allows you to select from 2, 4, 6 or 8 cups. So even if your water reservoir has 8 cup of water, the brewer will only brew your selected numbers of cups.

– Can I Get the Brewer with an Insulated Stainless Steel Carafe?

Unfortunately, it is only available with a glass carafe.

– Is It Programmable?

It is 24hr programmable with auto start.

– Any Downsides to the KitchenAid Pour Over Coffee Maker?

  • There are a few complaints from customers that the coffee doesn’t stay hot for too long after brewing even though the glass carafe sits on a hot warming plate. So we would recommend brewing only as many cups as you’d like to drink at a time.
  • There’s no pre-infusion or blooming process. In manual pour-over, this is an important step where you saturate the coffee ground with only enough water to wet it, this leads to de-gassing the coffee and produces a better brew. However, the coffee is still evenly saturated when brewing.
  • It is considerably large in size, so make sure you have enough space before buying it.

Kalita Wave

What Is Kalita Wave And What Makes It Different?

Kalita Wave is one of many pour-over coffee brewers that is preferred by fans of specialty coffee and manual coffee brewing. Available in two sizes and three type of materials (Ceramic, Glass or Stainless Steel), Kalita Wave offers something for everyone.

What differentiates Kalita Wave than other pour-over drippers is its design. Unlike other drippers, the Wave is flat-bottomed, which gives you a more even extraction of coffee.  It also uses a specially designed paper filter that reduces the contact between the brewing space and the dripper, giving you a fuller flavor.

Types of Kalita Wave Drippers:

Kalita Wave Materials

As we mentioned, the Kalita Wave dripper is available in three different types: ceramic, stainless steel and glass. Is there a difference between these three materials?

  • The first difference is aesthetics only. They all look pretty great but you could prefer one to another only based on looks.
  • There’s also heat-retention, the stainless steel supposedly keeps heat the most, followed by the ceramic then glass. But this does not affect the brewed coffee much.
  • Price wise, the glass is the cheapest, but also it’s the most fragile and needs to be handled with care. The stainless steel dripper should be the most efficient.

When it comes to performance and how they brew, all three models work exactly the same.

Comparing Kalita Wave to Other Pour Over Drippers:

Kalita Wave vs. Hario V60:

Hario VDC-02W V60 Ceramic Coffee Dripper

The Hario V60 is the most popular pour-over dripper out there. It’s been available for ages (probably why it’s the most popular), and has been tested, tried and loved by many. How is it different than the Kalita Wave?

  • Hario V60 using a smaller hole at the bottom, this is your typical design for a pour-over dripper.
  • The Wave uses a one-of-a-kind flat bottom that distributes and drips the coffee more evenly than other drippers.

  • The Hario V60 is available in: ceramic, plastic, glass and metal, in many colors.
  • The Kalita Wave is available in glass, ceramic (available in few colors) or metal.

  • Hario V60 has sizes 1= 1 to 2 cups, 2= 1 to 4 cups and 3= 1 to 6 cups.
  • Wave: #155 for 1 to 2 cups and #185 for 3 to 4 cups.

Paper Filters:

  • Hario V60 can be used with any cone style paper filter and it’s not restricted to their own brand of filters.
  • The Wave uses their own filters which have their unique shape that contributes to the quality of coffee.

Serving Coffee Using Kalita Wave or Hario V60:

Both drippers fit over standard mugs and can brew directly into your cup. If you’re brewing for more than one cup, it is recommended that you brew over a serving pot, which is available for both Hario V60 and Kalita Wave (sold separately by each brand).

Kalita Wave vs. Clever Dripper:

Clever_In Use

Clever Dripper is actually slightly different than other Pour-over drippers, including Wave and Hario V60. It combines two methods of brewing: pour-over and immersion.

Brewing Method:

  • Clever Dripper: it looks like many drippers with its cone-shape, but the Clever is able to hold the coffee while it brews instead of going through right away. The coffee continues to steep (immersion) until you decide it’s time to stop. When you place the dripper over a mug or pot, it will start pouring the brewed coffee.
  • With the Kalita Wave, the coffee will start to pass through the dripper as you pour in water.

  • Clever is available in two sizes: Small and Large.

  • The Clever is available in TRITAN, BPA-FREE plastic only.

Paper filters:

  • The Clever dripper can use any cone style paper filter. Size #4 for the Large and #2 for the Small.

Kalita Wave Kettle vs. Hario Buono Drip Kettle, Which Is Best?

As a fan of pour-over, you probably know the importance of using a goose neck kettle to pour water in your brewing process. It allows for a better distribution of water over the dripper and results in an even extraction.

The question is, is there a difference between Kalita’s Wave Kettle and Hario’s?

Truth is, there’s not a lot of difference between the two kettles, but here’s what we were able to come up with from our research:

Capacity and Origin:

  • The Kalita Wave kettle is available in 1L capacity only. It is made in Japan.
  • The Hario is available in 1L and 1.2L capacities. It is made in China.

  • The handle on the Kalita Wave kettle is wooden, which gives it a better aesthetic but can draw some heat.
  • The handle on the Hario kettle is silicone.

Many people seem to believe that all pour-over coffee makers results in the same coffee brew. That’s not true. The design of the coffee pot will actually affect how it taste, and that’s what we’re here to talk about in this post. We’re comparing the relatively new Bodum’s Pour-over to the most popular pour-over maker out there, the holy Chemex.

Bodum Pour Over Coffee Maker:

Bodum Pour Over with Permanent Filter

Bodum is known for its beautiful design and aesthetics. This is true to everything they create, including their pour-over coffee maker:

  • Made from mouth-blown borosilicate glass.
  • 34 oz capacity,
  • Wrapped with a silicone sleeve that is available in many different colors.
  • Includes a permanent stainless steel mesh filter. Do not use paper filters.

  • The Bodum design features a wider neck than the Chemex. This makes it mostly compatible with its own permanent filter and not paper filters. The mesh filter is very fine, so you’ll have to use just the right grind to get your coffee to taste the way you want it. Using a very fine grind for example (which is wrong for pour-over), will result for the coffee to go through quickly, which will result in a very  light brew. If you’d like to slow the brewing process, you could be able to fit a paper filter on top of the permanent filter which will help make the steeping process longer.
  • On the other hand, the Chemex only uses paper filters that is made by Chemex. These filters are heavier than most coffee filters, this allows the coffee ground to steep for a longer time, resulting in a stronger cup of coffee. Also because the neck on the Chemex is smaller, it drips slower than with the Bodum.
  • There are two kinds of Chemex, only one of them is made of Hand Blown glass. The hand blown is more expensive than both the Bodum and cast glass Chemex.

Included Accessories:

  • Although the Bodum is slightly more expensive, it includes everything you need with it: a permanent filter, a coffee scoop, a lid.
  • The Chemex doesn’t include any accessories with it. Your ongoing expense will be buying the filters which are sold in a box of 100 filters for around $10 to $15.

Which One To Buy?

The majority of pour-over lovers swear by Chemex, and we cannot disagree. Chemex does produce an aromatic and crisp cup of coffee. But that doesn’t mean that the Bodum isn’t a good one, it’s just newer to the scene.

  • If you prefer a stronger cup of coffee, you should definitely go with the Chemex which has a longer steep time.
  • If you enjoy a lighter cup, you’ll like what the Bodum Pour Over can make you.
  • If you’re most concerned with the quality of the coffee pot itself, the Bodum gives you a higher quality of mouth blown borosilicate glass for a friction of the price of the hand blown borosilicate Chemex. However, the cast glass Chemex is cheaper but the glass is not as good as Bodum’s.

Many people search for a stainless steel coffee maker that doesn’t include any plastic parts, worrying about hot water coming in contact with those plastic parts might lead to an undesirable taste.

When searching for the term stainless steel coffee maker, you’ll probably come across two things:

  • A regular plastic/stainless steel housing with vacuum stainless steel carafe.
  • Or a full stainless steel body with a vacuum stainless steel carafe.

Here’s an example of a full stainless steel coffee maker:

KRUPS KT600 Silver Art Collection Thermal Carafe Coffee Maker with Chrome Stainless Steel Housing

The KRUPS KT600 Silver Art Collection: a full stainless steel body 10-cup coffee maker with stainless steel thermal carafe (which you can learn more about here).

Before you get too excited, this machine, and probably all machines, still have plastic interiors. Truth is, there are NO drip coffee makers that contain no plastic parts at all. So, what do you do if you want to produce coffee without using any plastic parts? You have a few options….

How To Make Coffee Without The Use of Any Plastic: (Alternative Coffee Brewing Methods)

Quick note: We get many emails telling us that some of the products recommended by us do contain plastic (as obvious from the photos). Well, yes, some products may contain plastic parts on their EXTERIOR. The plastic does NOT come in contact with hot water or coffee on the inside of the coffee maker, and that’s why we’ve qualified them as plastic-free coffee makers.

Cuisinox Roma Stainless Steel Stovetop Espresso Maker

You can use a stovetop moka/coffee maker. They’re all stainless steel, no plastic parts at all. But of course, it’s pretty manual and no fancy features. See our favorite stainless steel stovetop coffee makers here.

Bodum BEAN French Press

Use a French press. It’s also very manual, but easy and quick to use. And most importantly, no plastic parts! Click here to see the best french press pots you can buy.

Farberware Percolators

You can use a stainless steel coffee percolator which has no plastic parts in its interior at all (some plastic parts out the exterior). There’s an electric or stovetop option, it’s nice and quick, although the method itself is old, the new percolators have been updated to meet a modern user’s expectations.

Or you can use a ceramic drip pour-over coffee maker. Click here to learn more about the Hario ceramic dripper pictured above.

Hario "Technica" 5-Cup Coffee Syphon

A Syphon Vacuum coffee maker is also an option, but requires some expertise.

As you can see, if you’d like your coffee without the use of plastic, you’ll have to go back to basics. We highly recommend a Hario Dripper or a French press as a fast and easy way to make delicious coffee, followed by the stovetop coffee maker and the percolators.

Best Stainless Steel Double Wall French Press With No Plastic Parts:

As we’ve already recommended french press as an alternative coffee brewing method, most press pots are made of glass with plastic exterior. Although that does not affect the taste of the coffee as the plastic does not come in contact with it, many people would still prefer that their pot does not include any plastic at all.

Why Choose a Stainless Steel French Press?

  • a stainless steel french press is slightly more expensive than its glass/plastic counterpart, but it is more durable, it doesn’t scratch or break.
  • It is double-walled, so it keeps your coffee hot for a longer period of time.
  • It’s more stylish.
